As from March 2010, Carers Queensland is able to offer eligible family carers the opportunity to undertake training in a Certificate III in Community Services Work. This course will be offered to family carers for a small student fee of $120, plus the cost of an accredited first aid course (approximately $90) – an excellent opportunity for family carers to take advantage of accredited training at a minimal cost. “This is a great opportunity because many carers struggle to transition into the workforce after their years of caring and this course provides an easy bridge for them to make this jump,” said Midge Spice, Project Officer, Education and Training. “As we are only a small organisation we are keeping this first group quite small but there may be the opportunity to expand numbers in following years.” Modules in the Certificate III Community Services Work will be offered between April 2010 and September 2010 at Carers Queensland Camp Hill (Brisbane north) and Stafford (Brisbane south) training rooms. Students will be required to complete all assessment work by 31 September 2010 in order to gain accreditation in this certificate. Midge said that unaccredited training for carers is also offered in core modules which assist carers to manage the caring role as well as giving them other work options to pursue. Topics include: ‘Maintaining health and wellbeing’; ‘Identifying care requirements’ and ‘Participating in support networks and services’. Senior First Aid and CPR Training are also offered to carers at reduced rates. Interested participants must be caring or have recently cared for a family member or friend, be receiving a government benefit and should not presently be in paid employment.
