There is no reason why you can’t make any day a special one for your father with these clever tips.

We might have just celebrated Father’s Day last weekend, but really, there is no reason why you can’t make any day a special one for your father.

It is always important to take time to show your father how much you care about him, to show gratitude and appreciation for all he has done for you and to do something that demonstrates what a special place he holds in your heart.

Here are some simple ideas developed from the www.simplesavings.com.au website that don’t cost the earth but are rich in meaning. You can try one at any time of the year.

  1. Be a chef for the night at your dad’s home – whether it is at the nursing home or at his house. Send him a special three-course menu by post, email or fax before the night to tell him what he will be eating on his special night. Pick foods that are his favourites. Set the table just the same as in a restaurant, with fresh flowers from the garden and a copy of the menu.
  2. Make an appointment with your dad to record an oral history session. Get a tape recorder and sit with him for an hour, getting him to reminisce about his youth, the early days of the family, or his working career. You won’t regret it once he has gone, as that history he holds is irreplaceable!
  3. If your father lives a long way away, why not take some photos of yourself and the family – especially if there are grandchildren – and email them to your dad. It is a great way to stay in touch.
  4. Another thing to do is to buy a small cheap web camera and set it up on your computer so that your dad can see you and the family in real time any time he wants to speak with you using Skype … and yes, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. Setting up Skype on your dad’s computer (or your own), is so very simple, even a child can do it. Just go to Once you have Skype set up, it is easy to make a Skype call during any kind of family gathering, like birthdays or even just a regular mealtime, for example. The person who cannot be with you then gets to participate in real time with the whole family.
  5. Another thing that you can do is plan a special outing with your dad. Once every couple of months you can go to a different gallery or museum and afterwards, discuss what you have seen over a cup of tea or coffee.
  6. Or, try a ‘mystery drive’. The drive can be roughly planned or unplanned – it is up to you – just make it somewhere you think your dad would enjoy. Maybe take him to see his favourite football team.
  7. And finally, here is a special little breakfast recipe that is sure to please any father.

QUICK AND EASY BREAKFAST PIES

These are the ingredients required for 1 person:

1 slice of bread
1 Egg
1 rasher of bacon
Grated cheese
Chopped chives

Take the slice of bread, cutting off the crusts, and butter it. Place it in a muffin tin with the butter side down. Add one egg (whole) a slice of bacon, which has been trimmed to fit if necessary, and top with cheese and chives. Bake until golden brown. Easy! Pastry bases are also a tasty alternative for a Sunday breakfast, or when you have visitors.
