The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workplace Services Unit was established by the NSW Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) in March 1999. The unit assists Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW to understand their rights and responsibilities as employees, managers and employers. In particular, the unit advises indigenous people on the laws relating to:
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Advisory Service is a specialist telephone enquiry service. Callers receive information on NSW employment laws, advice on employment issues and information on available services. All calls to the service are treated confidentially. Callers pay only for the cost of a local telephone call.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workplace Services Employment Kit gives detailed information for organisations (managers and management committees) on establishing lawful, productive, equitable and innovative working relationships. The Kit is a loose-leaf service and updated periodically by the Workplace Services Unit.
The Workplace Services Unit conducts workshops that cover employment issues, NSW employment laws, minimum employment standards, good employment practices and the DIR's services. The workshops are conducted on request, through community organisations and government agencies in regional centres throughout NSW.
