Who is a working carer? - A working carer is a person who is in paid employment and who cares for a relative or friend who is ill, frail, has a disability or is ageing. They may work full-time, part-time, casually or have a business of their own.

Cheap computers and Internet

taking_notes.jpgIf you are a low income earner there are a number of programs running that provide free or cheap computers and one organisation that now offers low cost Internet access. This article has details about some of these organisations and what they offer along with information about libraries and community technology centres that offer free internet access and training.

To qualify for some of these offers you need to be hold a benefits card from Centrelink.


Green PC
Green PC refurbishes used computers received from government and business organisations and makes them available to those who might not usually be able to afford a new computer system.

WorkVentures Connect IT
WorkVentures Connect is in the business of turning ex corporate and government PCs and peripheral equipment into affordable systems for disadvantaged families, schools and not for profit organisations around Australia. WorkVentures has been successfully partnering with corporations, state and federal governments for over 20 years and together we have been trying to bridge many of the social problems facing our communities. In 2006 WorkVentures introduced an interest free purchase plan, which means clients can pay the computer off at no extra cost over a three month period.

Charity Computers (Supported local service ACT)
To supply a low cost, fully supported computer to disadvantaged people in Australia through local churches.

Other Options
Check your local newspaper classifieds. Watch out for advertised promotions in your newspaper - from time to time Councils and other organisations have second hand computer sales when they are upgrading their computers.

LOW COST INTERNET ACCESS

DIAL UP - Working carers who are on very low incomes can negotiate a dial-up internet connection with TADAustConnect for $6.60 a month. This service is available to people on the Disability Support Pension, Aged Pension and veterans, and other pensioners or carers by arrangement.
