Doctors from around Australia are reporting significant health results from the uptake of people with an intellectual disability, using the free Annual Health Assessments that are now covered by Medicare.

GPs report they are finding previously untreated issues when doing the assessment, including reflux, tooth decay, skin cancers, medication side-effects and various problems with vision.

Not all GPs will be aware of, or think to offer this assessment and health check. Families and carers when making the appointment should explain that the person is seeking an assessment under Medicare item 718 and request a long appointment.

If the assessment needs to be done at the person’s home, the GP can charge extra under Medicare item 719.

The person’s medical records and current medications should be taken to the assessment by someone who knows the person well to help provide the information the doctor needs.

More information on the health check for people with an intellectual disability is available on the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing website at: www.health.gov.au
