It is importnat you are aware of all the opportunities you have to vary your work hours before going straight for your carers leave. Try and use workplace flexibility provisions first (especially for short appointments) and save Carer’s Leave for emergencies.

If you have used your personal/carer’s leave and compassionate leave entitlements, you could take part or all of any annual or long service leave owing to you.

If you feel comfortable doing so, let your employer and work colleagues know all about your caring responsibilities so they can support you. Try and anticipate any leave you will need to take by being organised at work. Others can then pick up and finish your tasks if needed during your absence.
