Harmony Day – an annual event that celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promotes the benefits of cultural diversity – will be held across the nation on Sunday, March 21.

The continuing message of Harmony Day is ‘Everyone Belongs’. It’s about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

The 2010 theme is ‘Express Yourself’. This gives everyone the opportunity to share with others the importance of diversity in their workplace, school and community through action, performance, fashion and food.

Since Harmony Day began in 1999 thousands of schools, community groups and organisations across Australia have hosted Harmony Day events. The event is managed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

There is no limit to the range of activities that can be held for Harmony Day and work places, schools, community groups, local government and businesses are encouraged to get involved and actively support this day of celebration.

You can see what’s on in your local area by visiting the on-line National Harmony Day Diary search facility: National Harmony Day Diary Search. There are hundreds of events listed right across the nation.

Some events are being held on other days during the month of March, and some are being held in April. For support to hold an event in your workplace, follow this link: Get Involved.

One example of a workplace getting behind Harmony Day is Cargill Beef Australia, based in Wagga Wagga, which is holding a celebration in the staff canteen.

They plan to decorate the canteen with balloons and have a Harmony Day ‘tattooing station’. Staff will enjoy a BBQ lunch with music from different countries, food from different cultures and flags from different countries, as well as a ‘culture quiz’ for employees to have a go at – giving them a small insight into the cultural traditions and beliefs of their co-workers. Good onya, Cargill Beef Australia!
