Support Groups Carer support groups allow people of similar circumstances to get together, let off steam and relax by sharing experiences, feelings, ideas, concerns, information and problems.
It is an opportunity to have a break, socialise and learn from other carers. Many groups welcome any carers while others focus on caring for people with a specific disability or illness. Groups can meet at different times of the day and night so that working carers can attend, and anyone can raise a topic for discussion. Unfortunately there is no up to date list of carer support groups. This is something which the Gateway is looking into providing. There is an old list provided by Carers NSW here: http://www.carersnsw.asn.au/Default.html?/infosupport/csg.htm but you should keep an eye on the new Carers Australia website which will have new information hopefully coming soon. What next?If you would like to discuss the issues raised in this Fact Sheet you may like to try: - checking out our Services Directory to find the local services that may be able to assist you as a working carer
- contacting Carers Australia on 1800 242 636 for information, support, referral and advice about your caring role and services that can assist you. If English is not your first language and you need assistance in talking with the Centre, contact the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131450.
- subscribing to our monthly newsletter, Work 'n' Care, for regular information and support regarding the issues facing working carers.
