Carer Associations Most carers are not aware that help is available or how to access it. Being a carer is often something people don’t plan to do: a baby may be born with cerebral palsy; a mother may become frail with ageing; a husband may have an accident that leaves him quadriplegic; or a daughter may develop a mental illness. For many people, caring is a 24 hour job that is emotionally, physically and financially stressful. Carers may not realise that other people experience the same problems and emotions. Caring can be so demanding that little energy is left to search for assistance or lobby for more support. Yet the estimated 750,000 carers in New South Wales save the community and government over $6 billion per year by keeping the person they support at home. What do carers associations do? Each Carers Association operates independently and offers a range of services and support such as:
The Associations all operate a Commonwealth Carer Resource Centre, and share the one toll-free number Australia-wide for carers to call for assistance: 1800 242 636. Carers NSW Carers NSW is the NSW association for relatives and friends who are caring for people with a disability, mental illness, chronic condition or who are frail aged. It is the peak body for carers in New South Wales and an internationally recognised leader in innovative carer support. In addition to all the services and support mentioned above, the Commonwealth Carer Resource Centre, located at Carers NSW, offers a free Carer Support Kit containing practical information. It is available in 13 community languages and there is a version for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander carers.

Carers SA Carers SA is a Carer founded organisation representing all Carers in South Australia. An Association exists in each State with the national body Carers Australia which is located in Canberra. The Association is a non-profit incorporated community-based organisation with a membership in the thousands. Carers SA aims to empower Carers to participate in partnership with government and non-government organisations for the provision of better services, to improve the conditions under which Carers work, and to increase recognition of Carers' contribution to the South Australian community and economy. Carers SA was established in 1989 and provides information and advocacy for people who have taken on a caring role. The Association uses direct feedback from Carers to develop policy and advocate at all levels of government on behalf of Carers.
Carers WA Carers WA is a non-profit community based organisation and registered charity dedicated to improving the lives of the estimated 250,000 family Carers living in Western Australia. Part of the National Network of Carers Associations, we are the peak body recognised by both State and Federal governments, as the voice of family carers. Carers WA represents carers' interests in the Western Australian community. Our role is to work in active partnership with carers, persons with care and support needs, health professionals, service providers, government and the wider community to achieve an improved quality of life for carers.
Carers TAS Caring can be a highly rewarding experience when appropriate support is available. However, without such support, the responsibility of caring can have an adverse effect on a carer's physical, mental and emotional health as well as an impact on their short and long-term financial security. The demands of caring can make it harder to have a job, go to school or to simply take some time to relax. It is important to remember that whatever affects carers also affects their whole family.
Carers ACT Carers ACT also acts as the ‘voice’ of Carers in the ACT, working to inform the community and governments of the contribution that Carers make to the community, and the issues that they face in their role. Through this, Carers ACT aim to get better recognition and outcomes for Carers.
