Carer Associations
In each State and Territory there is a Carers Association working to bring the needs, views and concerns of carers to the attention of the community as a whole including governments, policy makers, health professionals, service providers and business.

Most carers are not aware that help is available or how to access it. Being a carer is often something people don’t plan to do: a baby may be born with cerebral palsy; a mother may become frail with ageing; a husband may have an accident that leaves him quadriplegic; or a daughter may develop a mental illness. For many people, caring is a 24 hour job that is emotionally, physically and financially stressful.

Carers may not realise that other people experience the same problems and emotions. Caring can be so demanding that little energy is left to search for assistance or lobby for more support. Yet the estimated 750,000 carers in New South Wales save the community and government over $6 billion per year by keeping the person they support at home.

What do carers associations do?
Each Carers Association operates independently and offers a range of services and support such as:
  • information and referral services
  • carer support services such as counselling, carer support groups and friendship groups
  • advocacy – lobbying state and territory governments, service providers, policy makers and the media about issues affecting carers. In particular carer associations lobby governments for better financial assistance, additional services, access to emotional support and workplace support.
  • carers newsletters
  • community development
  • education and development – workshops and information sessions to carers and service providers
  • research and policy
  • respite coordination
The Associations all operate a Commonwealth Carer Resource Centre, and share the one toll-free number Australia-wide for carers to call for assistance: 1800 242 636.

Carers TAS
At Carers Tasmania, they offer a range of services and programs to support family Carers. Including: Counselling; Carer Advisory Service; Education & Training; Carer Support Groups; Carer Representation.

Caring can be a highly rewarding experience when appropriate support is available. However, without such support, the responsibility of caring can have an adverse effect on a carer's physical, mental and emotional health as well as an impact on their short and long-term financial security. The demands of caring can make it harder to have a job, go to school or to simply take some time to relax. It is important to remember that whatever affects carers also affects their whole family.
